Apathy Collage

This collage was created from mixed materials that ranged from old stamps, ancient post cards, twine, and mulberry paper, to paint and graph paper. When attempting to create something that would embody the meaning behind the word apathetic (which is deined by the Apple dictionary as "indifference, lack of interest, lack of enthusiasm, lack of concern, unconcern, uninterestedness, unresponsiveness, impassivity, dispassion, lethargy, languor, ennui; rare acedia" ) I thought of something that puts forth an effort, but does not follow through. To me, apathy is best seen by people who know that something can be improved and that they are capable of performing this change, yet their will is not strong enough to perform the action. Apathy can appear beautiful, but it is really a pathetic set of mixed images hiding behind a mask. This piece is protected in a hand-made frame and set off by black mat board.
